385 - Turning Club - Nick Arnull demo

Wet sycamore is splendid for long shavings - many feet long and with a range of at least six feet… some fun while creating the outer shape and spiggot for the thin walled bowl with natural bark rim.

The bowl insides were turned using the both the Rolly Munro and the Woodcut hollowing tools. With the inner shape completed Nick used a strong light, and the room lights off, to turn the outside to the required thickness.

He then demonstrated spindle turning with a variety of tools, including using the point tool for beads, and using oval and round skew chisels for burnished and cut surface finishes.

More spectacular shavings and a very thin walled bowl (1-2mm) was created. This was then carved and pierced with piercing tools.

He finished with a demo of finishing techniques on a platter base.

The theme for next week will be "Pen and pencil holders" - as used on an office desk.
