360 - Turning Club Meeting - 11/Feb/2012 - Stuart King demo.

Stuart created a classic shaped form for the body of the Ring Box. This was then wire brushed and painted black. Gold Gilt was then applied to accentuate the pattern of the growth rings. The shallow inside of the ring box has been given a high gloss finish using just Super Glue and then has a spiral of shimmering paint.

Stuart uses a collection of burrs to pattern both wood and alternative materials. He also uses many home made chisels from quarter inch HSS bar- these enable him to create fine detail.

He made a selection of lids to go with the Ring Box. The initial decorated wood lid was adapted to become the Bird lid. Some of the box base was cut back and green shimmering paint applied. A lid with a highly decorated black corian inlay followed, then an ornate Ebony finial, and finally the decorative 'Ivory' flower on red corian. All include detailed patterning with separation lines to enhance the patterns.

The Japanese Kokeshi Doll has become popular. The head of this doll has a spigot/boss which pushes into a hole in the shoulders/body - the head can then move but not come out.

As a recommended practice piece Stuart created the Chess King with captive ring - this was made using just a half inch skew chisel.

Finally he created the Rose Bud finial - ready for another box lid.
