560 - Turning Club - Tony Wilson demo - Nov/2012

Tony Wilson is a regular demonstrator at the club. He started proceedings with a 6" x 12" branch of Wellingtonia wood and created the natural edged Mushroom Key Safe - ideally used in sets of three with two "dummies" - without the key compartment.

Starting with a 16in diameter and 1 inch thick Sycamore board Tony demonstrated the techniques to create a Cutting Board and to get the faces flat, parallel and smooth.

He continued with the creation of a heavy Shallow Bowl on a Balluster and Base in Oak followed by a Cake Stand with Oak plates of about 16 inches and 12 inches on a Ash tapered shaft. The final fit made use of a taper with sandpaper to ream the holes of the plates to the required size and shape.

The techniques for creating a pear followed. This made use of a specially made chuck with soft rubber internal jaws which enabled the pear to be offset and hence more natural.

The final piece was a Toilet Roll holder - a 24 inch vertical post on a base with the Roll Holder mounted on a pummel.
