Gary has been demonstrating for the club for 21 years ...
He started with basic spindle turning - with emphasis on the skew chisel.
Few turners seem to make plums. Gary demonstrated turning a plum - rather like an egg - but included a pair of grooves as with a real plum.
Gary them demo'd making a self-winding spinning top - with emphasis on care to balance the parts for smooth running. He showed the jigs used for consistency.
Next - a box in Mexican Rosewood with a white corian outlay (not inlay) in the lid.
He then turned a goblet in Yew - with a captive ring and a stem of some 3.5-4 mm diameter.
This was followed by a use for the 'waste' end of a banksia nut - mounted on a stem to give a mushroom. The top could be further refined if wanted.
Gary's pear has the upper part turned between centres. The thin end is them screw mounted in a jig which is used to form the shape of the base of the pear.
Next week - No theme set - try items from Gary's demo!.
