Turning Club - 19/Jul/2014
Professional turner Gary Rance gave today's demonstration. Gary has been giving demo's here now for around 20 years!.
He started with spindle turning basics. He then created a fob watch/medal stand in walnut - and showed the value of pin boards and jigs when efficiency and repeatable results are need.
Then he created a hollow egg in boxwood. Here jam chucks were used to hold the pieces - particularly when shaping the ends.
A cabriole leg was demo'd - this uses offset turning techniques. He explained how the positioning of the offsets affect the shape and angle of the leg and the foot position.
This was followed by a mushroom in Yew and a light pull in Bubinga.
Then he created a long stemmed goblet in Sycamore - this has two captive rings - one a v form and the other rounded - the stem thickness was just 2mm.
The final piece was a box with a patterned inlay.
